DRIVING DIGITAL INCLUSION How ICT, Literacy, and Policies Promote Micro and Small Enterprises in the Smart Economy

This book demonstrates that the integration of ICT, digital literacy, and supportive government policies is essential for enabling Micro and Small Enterprises to thrive and remain competitive in the smart economy.

Building Inclusive Growth Through Digital Transformation

In an era defined by unprecedented technological advancement, the digital economy has emerged not merely as a new sector, but as a transformative force reshaping every facet of our lives, from how we connect to how we conduct business. At the heart of this global shift lies the imperative of digital inclusion—a concept that extends beyond mere access to technology, encompassing the critical capabilities needed to harness its full potential. This book, “Driving Digital Inclusion: How ICT, Literacy, and Policies Promote Micro and Small Enterprises in the Smart Economy,” delves into this crucial subject, focusing on the indispensable role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), digital literacy, and supportive governmental policies in empowering Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) within this evolving landscape. MSEs are the lifeblood of economies worldwide, particularly in developing nations like Indonesia, where they serve as vital engines for employment generation, poverty reduction, and equitable development. Despite their profound significance, these enterprises often face formidable challenges in embracing digital transformation. This book seeks to illuminate these hurdles and, more importantly, to chart a clear path forward.
Drawing on extensive research, including empirical insights from Yogyakarta, Indonesia, this volume explores the intricate interplay between robust ICT infrastructure, the cultivation of digital literacy, and the strategic implementation of government policies. We examine how these elements collectively contribute to MSEs’ ability to compete, innovate, and sustain themselves in an increasingly interconnected viand “smart” economy. From the foundational importance of reliable internet access and user-friendly digital platforms to the necessity of targeted digital skills training and supportive regulatory frameworks, each chapter unpacks a critical dimension of digital inclusion. This book is intended for policymakers, researchers, entrepreneurs, and anyone invested in fostering inclusive economic growth in the digital age. It is our hope that the insights and recommendations presented here will serve as a valuable guide for designing effective strategies that empower MSEs to not only survive but thrive in the smart economy, ensuring that the benefits of the digital revolution are shared by all.
